Consulting + Mobile = Value

How consulting companies can benefit from emerging technologies?

Today a lot of companies across industries are adapting mobile & mobile based solutions rapidly. A majority of this is due to the hype in Media & Entertainment sector which is due to digital publishing, local deals, search & entertainment apps in the market. This hype in the market has created close to 50mil Apple iOS based devices around the world & according to statistics from Kantar Worldpanel it’s around 28.5% is what Apple has as a market share.

Now when it comes to consulting companies, providing solutions to enhance – process/workforce is crucial. Providing mobile solutions is another service that’s been adapted by consulting companies through technology consulting services. Consulting companies could provide solutions to new product development, design, conceptualization, envisioning of products, testing of current mobile solutions, looking ways to take their current internal web based application & mobilize it. These are some of the examples of how consulting companies are pitching to existing & new clients.

What’s new in the new iPad from Apple?

For the last year, the iPad 2 has become as big of a staple in my evening routine as my toothbrush. I get into bed, read articles I may have missed during the day, check Facebook and Twitter, attempt to beat my mom in Words with Friends, and when I’m traveling, I watch a few TV episodes on the 9.7-inch display.

But Apple has spent the last year pursuing ways to improve the world’s most popular tablet. The new iPad (no number) has a better display, with double the resolution of the older model; a faster A5x processor; a better 5-megapixel iSight camera; and there’s now an LTE option from Verizon and AT&T for faster web browsing.

My opinion
The new iPad is having a great screen ratio & high quality display which makes it great for browsing, surfing the web, watching movie trailors, but it's use in enterprise is as good as its predecessors.

Barnes & Noble Putting The ‘Final Touches’ On Its Next Big E-reader (SAI)

The New York Times has a lengthy profile on Barnes & Noble and its struggle coping with the recent decline of brick and mortar bookstores. Right now, Barnes & Noble is the only big chain left standing, partly thanks to its heavy push in e-readers and tablets.

Although, there’s always a chance it’s working on a 10-inch version of the Nook Tablet to combat the 10-inch Kindle Fire Amazon is rumored to be working on.

My Opinion - Well if there if they are really working on something. It should be either be better than their existing Nook - otherwise people won't spend a dime to buy something for less.

Developers drawn to Kindle Fire’s Million sales per Week

Amazon announced today that Kindle devices, and the Kindle Fire in particular, continue to fly out of the warehouse in dizzying numbers.

“For the third week in a row, customers are purchasing well over 1 million Kindle devices per week, and Kindle Fire remains the #1 bestselling, most gifted, and most wished for product across the millions of items available on Amazon.com since its introduction 11 weeks ago,” the company said.

The Kindle Fire isn’t just getting attention from consumers. Developer interest is on the rise, making Amazon’s new device the top Android tablet that developers want to code for in North America, just a few points behind where the iPad debuted, according to a new developer survey from Appcelerator and IDC.

My opinion - Amazon's Kindle Fire looks like a good fit for publishers because of it's large user base. I guess with the Apps building up for Kindle only time will tell how much profitable it's going to be for publishers.

Time Warner Cable boosts mobile strategy with app for Android tablets – MMD

Time Warner Cable has introduced an application for Android tablets to address the growing number of customers who own one of these devices.

The free TWC TV app for Android tablets gives customers the ability to program their DVR, add favorite channels and use their Android tablet as a remote control. However, the Android app does not currently offer live television, a feature that is found on the iPad app.

My Opinion – “I think most of the people will start getting apps. But is there a point of having tens of apps like this. All you need is one for your purpose of checking schedules & marking them on your app.”

Jetstar launches iPads for in-flight entertainment – CNN

Jetstar hosted a flurry of freeloading journalists to sing the praises of the iPad 2 as the new in-flight entertainment system. The gambit worked. Now the airline is making iPad’s available to passengers — who, unlike the journos, will have to pay for the privilege.

Qantas’ budget carrier is in the process of rolling out 3,000 iPads on its flights. By December, they’ll be on all trans-Tasman A320/A321 services, as well as A330 services, which includes domestic, short-haul international and long-haul operations to and from Australia and New Zealand.

My opinion - Inflight entertainment has been there for a while, companies have not adapted new technologies due to multiple reasons such as initial cost, management, handling & connectivity. If couple of things like connectivity & handling are sorted out, most of the airlines would start adopting this solution to get an additional revenue on-board their aircraft. On the enterprise side - a lot of companies like Delta airlines, American airlines have apps that can help check-in or issue boarding passes for traveling. That's Innovative.

With Apps, Wealth Management Goes Mobile – NY Times

As stock markets continue on their roller-coaster ride, even investors who profess to be buy-and-hold types have become eager users of mobile technology that allows them to track their portfolios almost on a minute-by-minute basis.

JPMorgan Chase, Merrill Lynch and UBS are part of a small group of banks that have released smartphone applications to their wealth management customers. The use of the application is often restricted regionally; the JPMorgan and Merrill apps are available only to clients based in the United States, and UBS’s is available only to Swiss clients.

My opinion - Banking apps would be going next level by accepting payments through NFC technology. It's only a matter of time & hardware companies will make the necessary changes to make this available at a lower cost for a wider spread & acceptability.
